CAS puts the spotlight on the community

The Community Awareness Series of the Jersey City Free Public Library will present Spotlight on the Community, which will highlight the Jersey City community’s commitment to protecting the City’s urban green spaces on Tuesday, April 19, from 6 to 7 pm on YouTube.

The online event will feature Dawn Giambalvo, president of the Canco Park Conservancy; and Sam Pesin, president of Friends of Liberty State Park. The event can be found at https://www.youtube.com/user/jclibrarynj/videos.

The Museum and the proposed Hoboken Municipal Complex

Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken recently issued a second online survey to gather public input for the proposed Hoboken Municipal Complex, which can be accessed here.

The Hoboken Historical Museum will be advocating for a presence in this proposed complex in order to expand their offerings to the public. Hoboken residents can let Bhalla and the City of Hoboken know that the museum can better serve the community when filling out the space that asks, “Is there anything else you want to share with us about the Hoboken Municipal Complex?” The deadline to complete the survey is Tuesday, April 19 at 8 pm

Bayonne Elks Bike Blessing

The Bayonne Elks Lodge 434 Motorcycle Committee will be hosting the 16th Annual Blessing of the Bikes on Saturday, April 16, from noon to 4 pm, rain or shine.

The celebration includes the blessing, food and beverages, a ride-in bike show, live music by She Said No and Keith Borrelli, and vendors. All proceeds will go to Benefit Elks Charities. There will also be a cash 50-50 drawing at 4 pm The Blessing of the Bikes will be accepting $20 donations and takes place at 364 Broadway, Bayonne.

Sultry Sistas will be hosting a Community Health and Resource Fair on Saturday, April 23, from noon to 4 pm Admission is free. The event is sponsored by King Solomon Lodge No.19 F & AM, PHA of NJ.

The fair will include workshops, speakers, demonstrators, health screenings, health fitness, community resources, food, raffles, vendors, and giveaways. The event will be held at 2 Oxford Ave., Jersey City.

WomenRising presents “Made with Love”

WomenRising, Inc., will be hosting a paint and sip fundraiser, “Made with Love,” on Wednesday, May 11, from 6 to 8:30 pm at the Andco space across the street from City Hall in Jersey City. The event is sponsored by Silverman Buildings.

Those who attend will be able to handcraft and take home a fresh flower bouquet. Tickets are $75 per person if purchased by May 1. After May 1, tickets are $85 per person, which includes all supplies.

There will be appetizers and an assortment of cheeses. Guests can bring a bottle of their favorite wine and all proceeds will benefit WomenRising, Inc.

Carnival Parade Alliance meeting to take place

The third community meeting for the Jersey City Carnival Parade Alliance will take place on Tuesday, April 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm on Zoom.

JC Carnival is calling on community organizations, DJs, carnival masqueraders, mask folklore, steel pan, moko jumbies, cultural bands, dancers, artists, designers, model, businesses, and the community participate in the annual Jersey City Caribbean Statewide Carnival Parade in July .

Suicide Prevention and Awareness at Bayonne Library

Post 19 of the American Legion and the Bayonne Free Public Library have announced that they will sponsor a presentation on Suicide Awareness and Prevention on Thursday, April 28, from 6 to 8 pm, in the second-floor gallery of the library.

Representatives of the US Department of Veterans Affairs will be making the presentation. The speakers are a special team trained to assist the public and to explain the warning signs of suicide.

The presentation is open to both veterans and the general public. The speakers will explain that suicide is preventable, and how to learn about the warning signs. You will learn where and how to get help for those in need, even if it’s you.

If you know that someone is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (Lifeline) at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or text the Crisis Text Line (text Hello to 741741). Both services are free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All calls are confidential.

The Veterans Crisis Line connects military service members and veterans in crisis, as well as their family members and friends, with qualified Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) responders through a confidential toll-free hotline, online chat, or text messaging service.

Registration open for LSC Science Camp

Liberty Science Center is now accepting applicants for their Summer 2022 Science Camp. The summer camp season will run for six weeks, from July 11 to Aug. 19, for kids from grades 1 through 8.

Campers from grades 4 to 8 can also participate in the Virtual Minecraft Neighborhood, which takes place all six weeks of LSC Science Camp. With a laptop, campers can move into the virtual Minecraft community where they’ll get to build their own town, set their own rules, and live how they want. All levels of Minecraft knowledge are welcome, and the course includes two free passes to explore LSC’s Minecraft: The Exhibition with a family member if they’re looking for more inspiration. All instruction for the course is remote.
