More is more: Gowanus Cliffs will be New York’s largest climbing gym

New indoor rock climbing facility with yoga and fitness center to accommodate free rock climbing all weekend

With 42,000 square feet, hundreds of climbing routes and a maximum wall height of 45 feet, The Cliffs at Gowanus has both the tallest walls and the largest climbing space in New York City. When The Cliffs at Gowanus kicks off its grand opening on May 14, more than 4,000 visitors will celebrate New York’s newly crowned largest climbing gym with a weekend of free climbing, clinics, competitions, food trucks venues, live music on the rooftop, and even circus performers. It’s not just another climbing gym opening: it’s the biggest and baddest, in a high-demand area.

Cliffs mission is to provide the best rock climbing experience possible to anyone who wants to stop and try it. “I’ve never seen anything like what we’ve built here,” said Mike Wolfert, CEO and Founder of The Cliffs. “We hope this global facility will inspire new climbers and welcome existing ones to join a diverse, inclusive and passionate community,” Wolfert said. “Let’s have fun together!”

The custom-built facility is The Cliffs Climbing + Fitness’ sixth location, offering three full floors of climbing with hundreds of climbing routes ranging from beginner to advanced. It will have the most comprehensive assortment of climbing training equipment in town, including a dedicated training room and two 10-meter speed walls (such as those featured at the Olympics).

In addition to high-end rock climbing equipment, the property offers a rooftop lounge with coworking spaces (and views of Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn), a fully equipped fitness center, a retail store climbing gear, a sunny yoga studio, and saunas. A restaurant will also open on the ground floor in the coming months.

Gowanus Cliffs will be ideal for beginners and experts alike, and is uniquely positioned to unite a diverse, inclusive, and passionate community in South Brooklyn. The gymnasium will offer bilingual classes, classes for adapted climbers, guided outdoor classes; group events, birthday parties and corporate teambuilding; competitive and recreational youth programs; and programs that provide access to underserved youth.

Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. Boosted by its inclusion in the 2021 Summer Olympics, active people are embracing its many facets: physical and mental fitness, community and relationship building, and meditative mental well-being.

Harrison Rhodes, Managing Director of The Cliffs at Gowanus, who has been rock climbing for almost 10 years, adds: “There is a version of rock climbing for everyone. Our job is to help you understand what this can be for you. My goal is to share this space with the community and create a welcoming environment for all.

The Gowanus Cliffs at 242 Butler Street will be easily accessible via the D, N, BQ, 2, 3, 4, 5 subway lines to Atlantic/Barclays station or the F, G lines to Bergen St station .. Alternatively, guests can cycle and park their bikes in the property’s bike storage. A discounted “Learn to Climb” package is available for newcomers to the sport, and an all-access subscription is available for $125/month.

There are currently five additional locations included in membership: The Cliffs at LIC in Queens, NY, The Cliffs at Harlem in Manhattan, NY, The Cliffs at Valhalla in Westchester, NY, The Cliffs at DUMBO in Brooklyn, NY ( an outdoor block facility under the Manhattan Bridge) and The Cliffs at Callowhill in Philadelphia, PA.
