OKLAHOMA CITY — The Plaza District Association has announced plans for the 23rd annual Plaza District Festival on October 1.

Free and family activities as well as a public celebration of the creation of new murals will take place from noon to 10 p.m. in the area of 1745 NW 16th St.

Organizers say the festival is a celebration of community creativity through arts and cultural programming. Notably, it takes place on the same day as the annual Plaza Walls Mural Exhibition.

Festival-goers can expect multiple live entertainment stages, more than 30 artist market vendors, eight food trucks, drinks tents and a specially designed area for children.

Internationally acclaimed band Colourmusic will headline this year’s event, which is set to take the stage at 9 p.m. Colourmusic has produced five studio albums since 2005 and has performed across the United States, including with the Flaming Lips of Oklahoma.

“The 23rd Annual Plaza Neighborhood Festival will feature its most diverse lineup of entertainment yet. This year’s festival features a stage dedicated to the incredible students, alumni and faculty of ACM at UCO, as well as multiple indoor and outdoor events, children’s programs from Everything Goes Dance Studio and musical ensembles from Colourmusic, Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards, and some surprises for people from all walks of life,” said Plaza Festival Co-Chair Desiree Yearby.

Several of the dozens of businesses in the Plaza neighborhood will be offering promotions and special programming throughout the day.

The 23rd Annual Plaza District Festival is the largest annual event in the Plaza District, attracting over 30,000 attendees. All proceeds from the festival are donated to the Plaza District Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Oklahoma City district and community through free monthly arts and culture programming, including including Live! In the Plaza, Milk Crate Jam, Mural Expo and Calderon Dance Festival. The Plaza District Festival is presented by Braum’s, Fowler Automotive, Oklahoma’s Credit Union and Modern Environment.

The Oklahoma Mural Syndicate has finalized plans for the seventh annual Plaza Walls Mural Expo, also taking place from noon to 10 p.m. on October 1, presented by the Inasmuch Foundation and Monster Energy.

According to organizers, more than 45 artists from California to Florida to Canada are expected to visit Oklahoma City to create 37 murals throughout the Plaza District. Visitors will experience live painting and music as the streets and alleys of NW 16th Street are transformed.

Muralists will begin creating works on September 26 and launch new murals on October 1.

Every month, at least 50,000 people visit the Plaza Walls rotating mural project, which has emerged not only as part of the city’s artistic landscape, but also as a source of pride and inspiration. This year, Oklahoma City was voted #1 in the nation for street art in a USA Today Readers’ Choice poll.

“Oklahoma’s public arts scene is a powerful tool for generating dialogue, building relationships, empowering communities and driving economic revitalization,” said Dylan Bradway, Vice President of Oklahoma Mural Syndicate. “We know OKC is becoming a national model for transforming public spaces and individual lives through art. The Plaza Walls play an important role in realizing this reality for our city and our state.
