When the 50th anniversary of Earth Day rolled onto the calendar for April 2020, Joseph Holt and his Choral Artists of Sarasota were more than ready.

In 2016, Choral Artists, along with the families of Daniel Moe and Richard Moe, had commissioned a new work from Canadian composer James Grant with an environmental theme. Originally they had thought to premiere it in 2019; then it occurred to them that the Earth Day anniversary, April 22, 2020, would make an ideal premiere.

But the additional time gave Grant “a chance to reflect upon it and tinker with it,” said Holt. “It gave it just a little bit more breadth; it allowed it to expand ever so slightly so it felt more natural.”
