A new novel brings romance, mystery, music and magic to the beach | Culture & Leisure

Local author Aislinn Archer and her chart-topping rock band aMUSEd return to Delaware beaches on Friday, October 7, when “Smoke on the Water,” Book 3 of the Mystic Beach Fantasy Rockstar Romance Series, is released in book form. electronic and paperback editions.

“This time we’re diving deeper into the paranormal fantasy element of the show,” explained Archer, a local resident for over 20 years. “’Smoke on the Water’ intersects with my urban fantasy series, the Mystic Beach Mysteries. The first book in this series, “Safe Harbour,” will be released in early 2023. “Smoke” is a great preview, as well as being an exciting standalone romance.

“Smoke on the Water” focuses on amused bassist David Carter, who is known as the band’s quiet intellectual.

“David starts with a secret no one else knows – that he’s pursuing, remotely, the marine science degree he gave up for the band,” she said. “But when he arrives in Mystic Beach for a working vacation to record their fourth album, he does so much more than write songs, go surfing and watch the local wildlife. In fact, he sees something he literally can’t. not believe – and in trying to figure it out, he stumbles upon a secret that not only defies science, but poses life-threatening risks to him and others.

Archer said she calls the resulting discovery “marine mythology,” as opposed to marine biology, because the story mixes elements of Celtic mythology with a realistic local beach setting and encounters with sea creatures that no scientist has ever known. never identified.

“The romance is half the story in this one, but that’s its heart,” Archer said. “David meets Piper – who is the sound engineer for the band’s incognito shows this summer – and sparks fly. But Piper faces many challenges: her own anxiety, being a woman in an industry still dominated by men and trying to keep a professional distance from a client with whom she has an irresistible attraction and a deep connection. On top of that, she has a huge secret that she can’t tell anyone.

This secret brings the pair together but also leads them into suspenseful encounters with a dangerous antagonist and the threats that hang over them throughout the book’s gripping final chapters.

Archer brings Piper to life from personal experience. She worked as a live sound engineer for bands in the area for years, in addition to being an award-winning journalist. Another real-life element in “Smoke on the Water” is an original song incorporated into the book, written and performed by Archer’s friend and local musician Al Cook, bassist and co-vocalist of classic rock band Tranzfusion. .

“When Al recently re-recorded his song ‘Remember’, I realized how perfect it was for this book. It didn’t just become a chapter title and part of the suggested playlist, it’s became part of the plot. He was very generous in allowing me to use him here, and there will be more of his amazing original songs to come with future books in the series.

The author is once again donating part of his royalties from his new book, this time to the Lewes-based Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation (MERR) institute, which responds to marine mammal and turtle strandings of sea in Delaware.

Archer is already working on the next book in the fantasy novel series, “Remind Me” – the story of David’s brother and aMUSEd singer Declan Carter. It’s due out on January 6, 2023, and is available for pre-order now.

“It’s going to be a race,” she said. “Everyone who has read ‘Smoke’ so far has urged me to finish ‘Safe Harbour’ as soon as possible so they can dig into the supernatural mysteries of this series. Declan’s complicated past, and there will be surprises on his path to redemption and a second chance at love.

Archer said she was thrilled with the early response to “Smoke,” with readers saying the series just keeps getting better. She also received support from some established writers of urban fantasy and rockstar romance.

“I’m extremely grateful to them and my readers for helping new readers find the show and keep it on the Top Sellers list for the Rock and Popular Music categories.”
